How Your Diet Can Affect Bladder Control

Males and females can have embarrassing bladder control problems that make daily living difficult. Here is how you can adjust your diet so that you don’t have frequent urges to visit the bathroom.

Diet Adjustment 1: Stop Consuming Spicy Foods

If you have bladder control issues, then you must give up spicy foods. Spices such as cayenne pepper, cumin and garlic will irritate your bladder, making you want to visit the bathroom as fast as possible. You can find other types of herbs or spices to use in your recipes so that you won’t have as many bladder control issues.

Diet Adjustment 2: Drinking Caffeinated Beverages

Caffeinated beverages such as tea, soft drinks or coffee also irritate your bladder. In addition, caffeine is a diuretic that helps to release the fluid in your tissues, leading to additional urges to visit the bathroom. Soft drinks have carbonation, and these bubbles can make you feel gassy, and if you feel that way, then your bladder will become irritated.

Diet Adjustment 3: Eating and Drinking Too Much

If you consume large meals and too much liquid at one time, then the weight of the food in your stomach can affect your bladder. This type of problem often occurs in obese individuals who have huge layers of fat in the abdominal zone that will apply pressure on the body’s sensitive bladder.

Diet Adjustment 4: Avoid Consuming Highly Acidic Beverages or Foods

Foods that are acidic such as citrus fruits or tomatoes can irritate the lining of your urethra and bladder, leading to incontinence and a lack of bladder control. If you have this problem, then you will need to limit your consumption of orange or grapefruit juice along with avoiding anything that contains tomatoes, including spaghetti sauce.

Diet Adjustment 5: Don’t Drink Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages such as wine or beer will make you want to urinate more often, and if you have a weak bladder, then you can have embarrassing incontinence issues. Rather than drinking alcoholic beverages at special events, you should drink plain or flavored bottled water.

Diet Adjustment 6: Limit Your Consumption Of Dairy Products

Some individuals with bladder control issues have more incontinence when they consume dairy products. Keep a food diary with you to keep track of the dairy products that you eat or drink so that you can notice if these types of items cause problems for you.

Diet Adjustment 7: Choose Nutritious Foods At the Supermarket

There are several foods that will calm your bladder so that you don’t have incontinence, so you can still eat nutritious foods such as blueberries, celery, bananas, zucchini or carrots to get enough minerals and vitamins.
